About Jaspar

Jaspar may not be able to walk, but he and his family certainly get around!

Jaspar is a charismatic, cheeky, fun loving 7 year old. He is deeply loved, and cherished by his family and in turn loves them as only a child can love his parents. Jaspar has severe cerebral palsy.

Jaspar has a perfectly developing mind, with all the charm, wit and cheekiness that you would expect from a 7 yr old boy, but he is trapped in a body that does not respond to his commands.

So how do I know Jaspar?

My name is Tim Gray and I was best man at his parents, Max and Filipas wedding. I have known Jaspar since he was born and I am very proud to be his Godfather.

What can be done to help, is there a treatment?

Cowboy Jaspar - YEE! HA!

Since first being diagnosed, Jaspar’s parents Max and Filipa have extended themselves to provide the best and most appropriate treatments to Jaspar. These treatments, beside being expensive and often grueling for both Jaspar and his family, have had significant impact on Jaspars condition.

Despite these intensive treatments in his early years Jaspar cannot speak, he cannot sit unassisted, and cannot walk without a frame.

Even with the best care, and all the love and attention, Jaspar’s long term prospects are not good.

On the horizon there is hope as there is a treatment that works on improving the functionality of the cerebrum. The treatment is very new (clinic started in 2007), the treatment is very effective but it is also very expensive.

66% of cerebral palsy sufferers treated show measurable improvement within 8 weeks. This percentage is much higher, and the effects most dramatic when the child is in the age range of 8 – 10 years old. Jaspar will turn 8 this year.

What treatment does Jaspar need?

Family trecking...

Jaspar requires 3 treatments in the next two years, and a further 3 treatments spread out approximately every two years. Each treatment costs 9,000 Euro (approx AUS$18,000 and UK £7,700) We expect the treatments to cost AUS $112,000 (UK £70,000) over the next 8 years.

My goal, and the purpose of this website is to facilitate the raising of funds for the first three of these treatments AUS $56,000. Max is looking to raise the other 27,000 Euro from UK fund raising. We will be keeping score of Aussies versus the Poms so “Come on Aussie, Come on…”

Help us to raise the $56,000 that we need to cover the initial treatment

To cover the cost of the treatments we need to raise $56,000. As well as donations I will also be looking for sponsorship to run the North Face 100.

What are we doing to help?

  • Tim is participating in a 100KM ultra mararthon on May 19th 2012.
  • Max and I are participating in a 56KM ultra marathon on April 23, 2011.
  • Why a 56km Marathon? 56km, to raise $56,000. That is we need to raise $1 per meter run.
  • We are actively looking for sponsors who would like to either appear on this web site, And or, have their logos appear on our training uniforms, and appear in treatment progress emails. We will be running some 1500 km each prior to this event, providing public exposure for sponsors.
  • Max and his family will provide email updates after the treatments to anyone who has provided their email address, and requested updates on how the treatments go.

What can you do to help?

  • Donations can be made directly to the HelpJasparWalk trust, which is accessible via this website MAKE A DONATION
  • Corporate sponsorship for the run can be organised by contacting Tim or Max via their contact details on the website
  • Please tell your friends about www.helpjasparwalk.com
  • If your place of work considers donations, please inform them of this cause
  • They have been flogging us in the cricket, so Please don’t let the POMs beat us in this fund raiser

What happens if we raise more than $56,000?

$56,000 will pay for Jaspars first three treatments. If we raised more than $112,000 (The cost of all treatments)

Two things will happen:

1. Surplus funds will be donated to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation

2. I will complete the 56 KM Ultra Marathon, and then run it again from finish to start.

Quick facts

  • 1 in 400 babies is diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
  • The incidence of cerebral palsy has not declined despite advances in medical science.
  • More premature babies are surviving and they have a higher risk of cerebral palsy.
  • We do not understand many of the causes of cerebral palsy, or how to cure it. But life improving treatments are being discovered.
